The American Association of University Women, Easton
(Pennsylvania) Branch, is the trustee of the Sarah Palmer and Tarbell
Scholarship Fund. The sources of the fund are bequests of Sarah Thompson
Palmer (1864-1965) and a memorial fund for Beatrice Eldora Tarbell
(1937-1972).
Sarah Thompson Palmer was a graduate student of J.H.
Tarbell in the 1920's. Over the years she became a benefactor to young
people and their educational endeavors. A bequest of Miss Palmer's was
incorporated into a memorial fund established for Dr. Tarbell's daughter,
Beatrice Eldora Tarbell. Miss Tarbell was an outstanding physical educator
in whose memory a fund was created to provide scholarships for young women
studying physical education at the universities where she studied and/or
taught.
After completing her master's degree at the
University of Wisconsin, she taught at Bemidji State College in Minnesota
and at Michigan State University for three years. Miss Tarbell had nearly
completed her dissertation when she was killed in an auto accident in 1772.
