Performance in Motion, Volume 11, Number 1, Spring 2003
Outstanding Graduate Student Award
Dawn Podulka Coe
Dawn’s research
focuses on physical activity in children. In her first year, Dawn
evaluated the validity of the CSA motion sensor and published her findings
in Pediatric Exercise Science. The study was HER idea, she
collected all the data, and required only minimal mentoring. This past
year, Dawn co-authored two chapters on pediatric exercise physiology for
an on-line clinical textbook (Up To Date). Dawn has another paper
under review, and one in progress. Her PhD dissertation involves a sample
of over 500 students. She is evaluating how physical education class
participation affects students’ physical activity behaviors, as well as
academic performance. Dawn applied for, and was awarded three grants to
support her project. Dawn taught KIN 310 and 411, as well as BIP classes.
Her SIRS have been excellent. Her grading schema is fair, but rigorous.
Dawn has also been a 3-year research assistant in the Human Energy
Research Lab. Her assistance has helped foster the lab’s excellent
research environment. In the Summer, 2001, Dawn worked with the Mott
Children’s
Health
Center
in Flint, MI. Her role was to run a “fitness and physical activity camp”
for children. Dawn has accepted a position as assistant professor at
Grand Valley State University. We congratulate Dawn on her
accomplishments and wish her continued professional success. |
