Deborah L. Feltz, chairperson, was awarded the
Outstanding Faculty Award from the College of Education Alumni Association. Dr. Feltz and
James Corcoran (alumnus, 1990) have published "Evaluation of Chemical Health
Education for High School Athletic Coaches" in The Sport Psychologist. Corcoran is
currently employed at LeHigh University. Dr. Feltz and a number of doctoral students have
been awarded a grant for $2,000 from the National Association of Sport and Physical
Education to design a multidimensional coaching confidence scale.
Vern Seefeldt, director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports,
has been reappointed by Governor Engler for a two-year term as chair of the Governor's
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He was also recently appointed by the Whittle
Corporation to advise the producers of Channel One PE-TV.
John Haubenstricker, professor, has been elected to the Board of
Directors of the Lutheran Child and Family Service of Michigan. Haubenstricker served as
President of the MSU Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, a scholastic honor society, during the
1992-93 academic year. He received a Certificate of Appreciation for contributions to
excellence in higher education, advancements of the objectives of the Society and service
as President of the Chapter at MSU.
Sam Reuschlein, professor, is a member of an advisory group to the
Michigan Department of Education.
Sam Reuschlein and John Haubenstricker, professors, are two members of a
four-author team in an article titled "Childhood Obesity" which appeared in
Research Reports: College of Human Ecology, MSU, this past Spring.
Crystal Branta, associate professor, has recently published a chapter
titled "The Physical Domain" in M. Kostelnik et al (Eds.), A Practical Guide for
Creating Developmentally Appropriate Programs for the Early Primary Years.
Lynnette Overby, assistant professor, was awarded a Lilly Fellowship for
the 1993-94 academic school year.
Stan Drobac competed in the National 65 and over Tennis Tournament which
took place in Seattle.
Jeanne Foley, assistant professor, has received an All University
Research Initiation Grant titled Magnetic Resonance Angiographic Spectroscopic Studies of
Muscles Metabolism and Blood Flow in Young Versus Older Human Subjects.
Yevonne Smith, associate professor, is on the 1993 North American Society
for Sociology of Sport Conference Planning Committee. The Conference was held November 3-6
in Ottowa, Canada.
Gail Dummer, associate professor, received the Ransom Arthur Award for
service to United States Masters Swimming. She is a member of the Editorial Board of
Adapted PE Quarterly. Dr. Dummer initiated the Sports Skills Program.
Jay Kim, specialist in PEES, won the OSAKA Award in recognition of his
outstanding leadership and officiating both nationally and internationally in the sport of
Judo.
Lynn Forsblom, instructor and undergraduate advisor, published "The
Great Lakes Wellness Conference: Promoting Health Through Schools" in the MAHPERD
Journal.
Jennifer Appel and John Kolar each received the Scholastic Achievement Award for
earning the
top grade point average in the PEES Department.
The Department received the Healthy U at Work Award which recognized MSU
worksites for outstanding efforts to promote health.
Elizabeth (Byelich) Newberry received honorable mention at the 1993 MSU
Student Employee of the Year Award Committee and Angela Fabus was a
finalist in the competition.
Jeffrey P. Striebel, undergraduate student of PEES, was selected as a
recipient of the 1993 Undergraduate Student Research Grant from Sigma Xi, The Scientific
Research Society.
Carol Rodgers has a new position at the University of Toronto in the
Department of Physical Education. Dr. Rodgers will be missed by all!
Jaci VanHeest, doctoral candidate, was selected as a recipient of the
1993 Graduate Student Research Grant from Sigma Xi, to help support her dissertation.
Julie Nellis was selected as the recipient of the 1993 Lawrence Sierra
award in the All-University Awards Program.
Steve Simensky, Ph.D. student, competed in two body building
championships this past summer. At the Rose City Natural Bodybuilding Championships, Steve
won first place in the heavyweight division and first place overall. At the Great Lakes
Natural Bodybuilding Championships, Steve came in first in the heavyweight class.
Tracy Olrich, Ph.D. student, took third place in the middleweight
division in the Central States Open Bodybuilding Championship in Detroit.
Manny Felix, one of the newest members of the Department
assumed his position as a post-doctoral fellow in September. The post-doctoral program is
an MSU effort to attract and retain exceptional minority students in science-related
professions. Manny is working with Dr. Jay Fiechtner, a rheumatologist at the St. Lawrence
Health Pavilion, and Dr. Gail Dummer in adapted physical education in PEES.

Janet Wessel Teaching Assistantship Awards
Dr. Janet Wessel, Professor Emeritus, Physical Education and Exercise
Science, was back on campus this fall, and had an opportunity to meet Jennifer
White and Deborah Shapiro. Jennifer and Deborah are the 1993-1994 recipients of
the Janet Wessel Teaching Assistantship Awards. Jennifer is an undergraduate student from
Williamston, MI and Deborah is a masters degree student from Toronto, Canada. Since
September, these students have been assisting Dr. Gail Dummer in the supervision of
student coaches in the Sports Skills Program. The Sports Skills Program was designed to
provide coaching in selected sports skills to children and adults with disabilities from
the greater Lansing area.
