Departmental News
Robert Malina,
professor and director of the Institute for the Study of Youth
Sports, was the recipient of the Citation Award from the American
College of Sports Medicine at its annual meeting in Denver in
May. Bob also has recently co-authored the book, Genetics of
Fitness & Physical Performance, and was given an adjunct
appointment in the Department of anthropology.
Jeanne Foley,
assistant professor, was awarded the 1997 MSU Teacher-Scholar
Award at the 1997 Awards Convocation and State of the University
Address in February. Jeanne also received a seed grant funded by
the Michigan Space Grant Consortium to study the magnetic
resonance imaging of fluid shifts in the limbs in response to
simulated weightlessness.
James Pivarnik
was promoted to the rank of professor. Jim also was selected for
induction into the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical
Education. He will be inducted at the academys meeting in
Bloomingdale, Illinois on September 13, 1997. He also received an
All-University Research award to study the Determinants of
aerobic fitness in Black and White adolescent girls. In addition,
Jim has agreed to teach one of the campus-wide freshman seminars
for 1997-98.
Lynn Forsblom,
undergraduate advisor and coordinator of the physical activity
program, was selected as a 1997 National Academic Advising
Association Outstanding Advisor. This award is given in
recognition of Lynns abilities as an advisor in a
nationwide competition. Lynn will be honored and presented with a
recognition plaque at the NACADA conference, October 6, 1997, at
the Kansas City Convention Center.
Deborah Feltz,
professor and chairperson, co-authored an article with two of her
former students (Melissa Chase and Cathy
Lirgg), "Do coaches' efficacy expectations for
their teams predict team performance?" published in The
Sport Psychologist.
Student News
Roop Jayaraman,
Ph.D. student, was awarded the 1997 MSU Excellence-in-Teaching
Citation at the 1997 Awards Convocation and State of the
University Address in February.
Eric Daniel,
B.S. student, graduated magna cum laude in Fall 1996 with a
cumulated G.P.A. of 3.837, the highest in his class and in the
department, and carried the banner for the College of Education
at the fall 1996 graduation ceremony.
Robert Neff,
Ph.D. student and his wife Tami, are the proud parents of a baby
boy. Robert Cooper Neff was born on May 14, 1997, weighing 8 lbs.
9 oz.
Katherine Jamieson,
Ph.D. student, received a Martin Luther King, Jr.-Cesar
Chavez-Rosa Parks (KCP) Future Faculty Program Fellowship for
1997-98. Kathy also received the Outstanding Hispanic College
Graduate Award from the Michigan Educational Opportunity Fund.
Sarah Strong,
B.S. student, graduated magna cum laude in Fall, 1996 with a
cumulated G.P.A. of 3.788.
Ivy Collins,
Ph.D. student, is a recipient of a College of Education Spencer
Research Fellowship.
Melissa Vidt,
B.S. student, spoke on behalf of the College of Education
scholarship recipients at the 1997 College of Education Awards
Dinner, April 18, at the East Lansing Marriott Hotel.
Joseph Carlson,
Ph.D. student, accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford's
Center for Research in Disease Prevention in the Stanford School
of Medicine.
John Fitzpatrick,
Ph.D. student, accepted a faculty position at Chicago State
University.
Lorenzo Parker,
Ph.D. student, accepted a faculty position at Chicago State
University.
Staff News
Marianne Oren,
a staff member with the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports,
will be starting a Ph.D. program in Rehabilitation Counseling
this Fall, 1997. She plans to continue to work for the Institute
as she pursues her degree within the College of Education.
