Performance in Motion, Volume 6, Number 2,
Fall 1998
Message
from the Chair
by Deborah L. Feltz, Chairperson
Beginning with spring semester, 1999, we
will be 100 years old! My, how we have changed since we were the Department of Physical
Culture back in 1899 with only one faculty member-the Rev. Charles O. Bemies. During our
year-long celebration, we will reflect back on our history, our scholarship, and our
students-now alumni. As a part of our celebration, we will be honoring four distinguished
alumni scholars at our centennial symposium, "Reflections on Kinesiology at Michigan
State University: Its Faculty and Alumni." The distinguished alumni who have been
selected by the faculty are Dr. V. Reggie Edgerton (Ph.D.'68), Dr. Richard Nelson
(Ph.D.'60), Dr. Beverly Ulrich (Ph.D. '84), and Dr. Maureen Weiss (Ph.D. '81). These four
alums were featured, along with the department, in the most recent issue of the New
Educator, the College of Education's alumni magazine. Let us know if you have not seen
this magazine and we will tell you how to obtain a copy. Also, check out page 3 of PIM for
a calendar of Centennial events.
In addition to being busy with preparations for our Centennial celebrations, we have
launched an assessment of the quality of our graduate program, similar to the one we
conducted on our undergraduate program. Dr. Gail Dummer is coordinating this self-study
and we hope to have results to present to our readership at this time next year.
Finally, we have been busy with what we do best-teaching and research. Dr.John
Haubenstricker's work and the longitudinal study on motor performance are profiled in
this issue. Also, presented on page 4 is a list of our graduates-the products of our
teaching. The 1997-98 academic year culminated with the graduation of 84 students with
B.S. degrees, 27 students with M.S. degrees, and 10 students with Ph.D. degrees. We also
continue to attract high quality students to our major. We currently have 430
undergraduate majors with 205 at the junior and senior level, and 34 in the teacher
certification program. In our graduate program, we maintained our enrollment levels with
68 M.S. and 40 Ph.D. students.
SEE YOU IN BOSTON APRIL 20 - 24!
Next spring the 1999 AAHPERD National Convention and Exposition will be in Bean
Town...Boston, Massachusetts, home of The Freedom Trail and Fenway Park. We've had so much
fun the past couple of conventions in St. Louis and Reno, we've decided to have yet
another Alumni and friends get-together this April. Circle this date on your calendar:
Thursday, April 22, Westin Hotel in the North Star Room from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m....
as always, check your convention program for any last minute change.
It's definitely the place to be so we hope to see you there! But here's a tip: Don't plan
to travel with Haubenstricker and Pivarnik!
