Gene Brown,
associate professor and coordinator of graduate studies, was elected
President-Elect of the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports
for 2001-2003. He also was an invited speaker at the International
Coaching Symposium of the Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation
(June, 2000), and he presented at the 2000 XVIII Symposium of the
International Society of Biomechanics in Sports held in Hong Kong.
Michael Clark,
assistant professor, was elected to the first Board of Directors of the
National Council for the Accreditation of Coaching Education. Dr. Clark
also authored Whos coaching the coaches in Sports in Schools, John R.
Gerdy, editor, published in August by Teachers College Press.
Deborah Feltz,
professor and chair, was elected President-Elect of the American Academy
of Kinesiology and Physical Education for 2000-2002, an honorary
organization of distinguished scholars of the field. She also was an
invited keynote speaker at the 2000 Seoul International Sport Science
Congress (August, 2000). Lastly, Dr. Feltz co-authored, The effect of
a coaching education program on coaching efficacy in The Sport
Psychologist with former doctoral student Leapetswe Malete, and The
relation of self-efficacy measures to sport performance: A meta-analytic
review in Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, with former
doctoral student, Sandra Moritz.
Jeanne Foley,
associate professor, co-authored Effects of aerobic capacity in the T2
increase in exercised skeletal muscle in the Journal of Applied
Physiology with Roop Jayaraman (doctoral student), Ron Meyer and Rob
Reid (MSU Physiology Department).
John L. Haubenstricker,
professor and director of the Youth Sport Institute, was honored as
Midwest Scholar of the Year 2000 by the Midwest District of the American
Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Additionally, Dr. Haubenstricker received an honorary Doctor of Laws
(Honors Causa) from Concordia
University where he earned his bachelors degree and served as faculty
from 1962-1973. Lastly, John recently accepted an appointment to serve
as director of the Youth Sport Institute.
James Pivarnik,
professor, was elected President-Elect of the North American Society for
Pediatric Exercise Medicine. Dr. Pivarnik co-authored several articles
with current MSU students (see Student News). Dr. Pivarnik also
co-authored Compliance with physical activity recommendations by
walking for exercise: Michigan behavioral risk factor surveillance
system, 1996 and 1998 in Morbid Mortal Week Rep (Rafferty, A.P.,
M.J. Reeves, H.B. McGee, and J.M. Pivarnik).
Chris Womack,
assistant professor, recently became a fellow of the American College of
Sports Medicine. Dr. Womack was awarded a research grant from the
American College of Sports Medicine to study homeostatic and vascular
exercise response in coronary artery disease patients. Additionally,
Dr. Womack was awarded a research grant from Life Fitness Incorporated
to study thrombotic and fibrinolytic responses to resistance training in
coronary artery disease patients. Lastly, Dr. Womack co-authored,
Weight loss, not aerobic exercise improves pulmonary function in older
obese men in the Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences

Rick Albrecht (PhD. '93) accepted a position
as an assistant professor in the Department of Movement Science at Grand
Valley State University.
Cindy Bjorkquist-Beadling (M.S. '94)
accepted a position as Executive Director of the Community Health
Foundation for Foote Hospital in Jackson, MI.
Deborah Garza (M.S. '96) received an M.S. in
Industrial Relations at Oakland University, MI, in June.
Anthony Kontos (Ph.D. '00) accepted a
position as an assistant professor at the University of New Orleans.
Linda Lyman (Ph.D. 96)
accepted a position as an assistant professor at the University of the
Pacific.
Leapetswe Malete
(Ph.D. 00) accepted a position as a research fellow in the department
of Sociology and Social Work at the University of the West Indies.
Tracy Olrich
(Ph.D. 95) accepted a position as an assistant professor in the
Department of Health and Physical Education at Central Michigan
University.
Sabrina Stanley
(B.S. 00) accepted a position in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise
Physiology at Union Hospital in Indiana.
Philip Sullivan
(Ph.D. 00) accepted a position as an assistant professor at Brock
University.
Steve Walk
(Ph.D. 94) was awarded tenure, promoted to associate professor, and
serves as undergraduate coordinator at California State University,
Fullerton. Dr. Walk also serves on the Editorial Board of Sociology
of Sport Journal.
Rodney Wilson
(Ph.D. 00) is serving as a research analyst for Michigan Department of
Transportation.
