What Is Governance?
The term "governance" refers to the decision-making processes in the
administration of an organization. Different
nations and different organizations within a nation may
approach governance concerns (who makes decisions? who pays the
bills?) in very different ways.
 | Sometimes the differences are because of reliance upon certain funding
sources. Funding sources for disability sport include government support,
proceeds from national lotteries, corporate sponsorships, and private
donations. For example, elite disability sport programs in Canada,
Australia, and Great Britain all receive some government support. Funds
from a national lottery help fund disability sports in Great Britain and
Spain. Disability sport in Spain is also funded by the
OncĚ Foundation. The U.S.
Olympic Committee does not receive government support, instead relying
upon private donations and corporate support; however, U.S. Paralympics
has more flexibility in seeking funding. |
 | Some of the differences are related to the history of disability sport
in the country. In some countries, athletes with a disability have always
been under the jurisdiction of the national sport organizations for their
chosen sports. In other countries, including the USA, athletes with a
disability have historically been served by disability-specific sport
organizations, and have only recently sought services from national sport
governing bodies (NGBs). |
Knowledge about the governance structures
associated with disability sport is important because it
influences the services and support offered to athletes with a disability.
