International Olympic Committee
Purpose/mission. The IOC is the umbrella organization
of the Olympic movement. The primary responsibility
of the IOC is the regular staging
of the summer and winter Olympic Games.
National Olympic Committees (NOCs). There were 199 NOCs
(member nations) as of
the year 2000. The NOCs are responsible for:

Promoting the Olympic movement at
a national level by providing support for athlete and high-performance
sport development and by organizing educational programs |

Selecting teams and competitors
for participation at the Olympic Games |

Supervising the preliminary
selection of potential bid cities for the Olympic Games. |
International Sports Federations (IFs). There are 35
International Olympic Sport Federations and 28 International Recognized
Federations. The IFs are responsible for the integrity of their sport on the
international level. These organizations establish the playing and
eligibility rules, set the schedule of events and select the referees,
judges, and other officials to conduct their respective sports at the Olympic
Games as well as other international competitions.
