International Paralympic Committee

Purpose/mission. The International Paralympic Committee is the international sports organization for athletes with physical disabilities, vision loss, and cognitive disabilities. The IPC organizes, supervises, and coordinates the Paralympic Games and other international multi-disability competitions.

National Paralympic Committees (NPCs). As of the year 2000, there were 160 NPCs (member nations). An NPC must have recognition from the country's Ministry of Sports, National Sports Council, or National Olympic Committee to serve as the only body with the right to represent sport for the disabled in that country. Major responsibilities of NPCs include:

bullet

Coordinate national disability sport groups that participate in the Paralympic movement.

bullet

Organize and lead the country's delegations at the Paralympic Games and other IPC sanctioned international competitions.

bullet

Support athlete and high-performance sport development programs in their nations. Assist in the training and education of sports administrators, national coaches, trainers, and classifiers.

bullet

Supervise the preliminary selection of potential bid cities for the Paralympic Games, World and Regional Competitions, or any other IPC sanctioned competition.

bullet

Organize in-competition and out-of-competition doping control programs.

bullet

Provide regular opportunities for classification.

bullet

Commit to provide equal opportunities for all athletes, from all disability groups, including persons with severe disabilities, women, and youth.
