International Disability Sports Organizations

Each of the disability sports organizations in the USA is affiliated with a parent international organization. These relationships are illustrated in the following figure. With the exception of CISS, all of the international organizations are affiliated with the International Paralympic Committee.

Overview

bulletCISS. The Comité Internationale des Sports des Sourds (CISS) was established in 1924 to provide sports opportunities for athletes who are deaf. CISS conducts the quadrennial summer and winter Deaflympics, as well as sport-specific world championship events.
bulletIBSA. The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) was founded in
1981 to provide sports opportunities for athletes who are blind and visually impaired. IBSA conducts the multi-sport IBSA world championships and also promotes competition for blind and visually impaired athletes at the regional and national levels.
bulletINAS-FID. The International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability (INAS-FID) was established in 1986 to provide sports opportunities for athletes with mental retardation and other cognitive disabilities. INAS-FID believes that persons with intellectual disability have the right to participate the sport of their choice at the level of ability they desire - either the the highly competitive open competition promoted by INAS-FID or the less intense ability-grouped competition as organized by Special Olympics International (SOI).
bulletCP-ISRA. The Cerebral Palsy - International Sports and Recreation Association (CP-ISRA) was formed in 1978 to provide sports opportunities for persons with cerebral palsy and related neurological conditions. CP-ISRA conducts the international Robin Hood Games and also promotes competitions at the regional and national levels.
bulletISMWSF. The International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation was founded in 1960. The organization, now known as the International Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Sports Federation, currently encompasses wheelchair athletes in a variety of summer and winter sports. The ISMWSF conducts the Stoke Mandeville Games annually except in Paralympic years.
bulletISOD. The International Sports Organization for the Disabled (ISOD) was founded in 1964 to provide sports opportunities for athletes with permanent disabilities who cannot participate on reasonably equal terms with non-disabled athletes.
