Disability Sports in Michigan

Many persons with a disability experience frustration when trying to locate sports programs. The information on this page includes strategies to use when searching for sports programs, as well as a listing of known disability sport programs in the State of Michigan that have operational web sites or email addresses.

Strategies for Locating Sports Programs

bulletLocating sports programs in your community. Contact park and recreation departments, health clubs, YMCAs/YWCAs, and sports facilities such as ice rinks, swimming pools, and bowling alleys to learn about both disability-specific and inclusion-based sports programs. Public school intramural and interscholastic sports programs should be available to children and youth with a disability. And don't forget "word of mouth" - ask other people with disabilities where they participate in sport and recreation activities.
bulletLocating programs in a specific sport. In addition to the suggestions above, go to the web site for the United States Olympic Committee at http://www.usoc.org, then use the "select a sport" feature on the home page to search for the sport of interest.  Then contact the sport national governing body to ask whether they operate programs in your community.
bulletLocating programs designed for persons with a certain disability. In addition to the suggestions above, check with rehabilitation hospitals or facilities.  Also go to the following disability sport organization (DSO) web sites. Ask whether the DSO operates programs in your community.
