| The Sports Skills Program provides opportunities for:
(a) Michigan State University students to develop an appreciation of
human ability and acquire teaching/coaching skills; (b) persons with
disabilities to improve sports skills and physical fitness; and (c)
members of the scholarly community to conduct research on physical
activity and disability. |
 |
Education - Students from Michigan State University who major in
Kinesiology are required to complete a 3-credit course in Adapted Physical
Activity (KIN 465). The lab component of this course (the Sports Skills
Program) provides students with authentic learning opportunities where
they teach and coach sports skills to persons with disabilities. |
 |
Outreach - Children
and adults with disabilities who reside in the greater Lansing area
benefit from instruction in sports skills. The Sports Skills Program
provides participants with an opportunity to improve their skills and
fitness, whether they are preparing for competition, developing skills
needed at school or work, or simply interested in having fun and achieving
better health and physical well-being. |
 |
Research - Faculty
members and students from Michigan State University are welcome to conduct
approved research projects in the context of the Sports Skills Program.
Recent projects have focused on motor skill acquisition, parent attitudes
about physical activity programs for their children with disabilities, and
the impact of physical activity programs upon the psychological skills of
persons with disabilities. |
