Physical Education Staff Evaluates Curriculum

Every member of the physical education staff in the school system should have the opportunity to provide input into the curriculum review process. This opportunity is provided in Step #5.

  • Each member of the physical education faculty receives a copy of the reports written by the external consultant (Step #3) and the task force (Step #4). Other curriculum documents (Step #2) are retained in the responsible administrator's office and are available for review by faculty members upon request.

  • Each member of the physical education staff is asked to complete the Physical Education Curriculum Survey. The responsible administrator disseminates the survey and instructions at an orientation meeting (preferred) or by mail. Each teacher completes the survey independently.

  • The external consultant and the responsible administrator tabulate the survey responses from the physical education staff.

  • The physical education staff meets to receive the tabulated data and to achieve consensus about the quality of the curriculum. This meeting is moderated by either the responsible administrator or the consultant. The goals of the meeting are to: (a) specify strengths, weaknesses, and recommendations relative to the physical education curriculum; (b) accept or suggest alternative perspectives relative to the consultant and task force reports; and (c) achieve consensus on recommendations for curriculum revision.

  • Next, a volunteer member of the physical education faculty (or a designated person such as the responsible administrator or consultant) writes the physical education staff report. The report should focus on recommendations for curriculum revision, and should include a description of the evaluation procedures used by the physical education staff and a list of all persons who participated. This report is subsequently disseminated to all members of the physical education faculty, who review the content for accuracy and offer editorial suggestions. The opportunity for review and edits may occur at a meeting called for that purpose (preferred), or the process may be conducted via mail.
