Overview of the Curriculum Evaluation Process
The curriculum evaluation process described on this web site is designed to
facilitate the cyclical curriculum review required by most school systems. The
process is time-consuming and requires considerable commitment by school system
personnel, however the results are worth the effort, namely a district-wide
physical education curriculum that helps all students to achieve a
physically active lifestyle now and in the future.
There are seven steps in this curriculum evaluation process:
This process emphasizes the importance of input from a variety of
constituents. Each individual or group is asked for information that s/he has
the expertise to provide. Although the
responsible administrator,
consultant, and
task force members are asked to
contribute considerable time and effort, time demands upon the
physical education staff
and community stakeholders are
minimized.
School systems that adopt this approach should be prepared to focus on the
district-wide physical education curriculum for all students. A
district-wide approach is needed to insure consistency in goals, objectives, and
learning activities across levels of the curriculum (preschool, elementary,
secondary, adapted) and across various teachers in different school buildings.
Attention to all students includes an examination of the extent to which
the district's curriculum adequately serves students of both genders, students
from different ethnic and cultural groups, students who are eligible for special
education, and students of various abilities and fitness levels.
